CDL & CLP SAP Program – Your Path to Getting Back on the Road

Failing or refusing to take a DOT-mandated drug or alcohol test doesn’t necessarily mean your trucking career is over. If you want to regain your commercial driving license, you must successfully complete a DOT SAP program for truck drivers.

Return to Duty offers online SAP services, ensuring full compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations. This process includes a required evaluation, education, and follow-up testing to help CDL and CLP drivers regain compliance and legally return to duty.

What Does the Return to Duty Process Look Like?

Getting back on the road after a failed drug or alcohol test can feel like an overwhelming process, but we are here to guide you. It’s all about getting you back to work in a safe, legal, and responsible way.

Here's a breakdown of our SAP program for CDL drivers:

1. Sign Up For an Initial Evaluation

The first step is a virtual evaluation with a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). This session includes:

  • A confidential one-on-one interview to understand your situation.
  • Clinical assessment questionnaires to evaluate your needs
  • A personalized education and/or treatment plan based on DOT requirements.

2. We Guide You Through DOT-Mandated Education

Next, you’ll complete the education, counseling, or treatment program required by your SAP. This is an FMCSA mandate, and everyone in the process must undergo some form of education, counseling, or treatment. Since each driver’s needs are unique, your SAP will guide you through a personalized plan tailored to your situation.

Important
: You’ll pay the treatment provider directly. These costs are separate from your SAP evaluation fees.

3. Schedule Your Final SAP Evaluation

Once you complete your program, you’ll meet again with your SAP for a final evaluation. After verifying that you’ve met all DOT requirements, we'll update your status in the FMCSA Clearinghouse (for CDL holders) and send a completion report to your current or prospective employer.

4. Return to Duty and Follow-Up Testing

Before you can resume safety-sensitive duties, you must pass an observed return-to-duty drug test ordered by an employer. A negative result is required. Your SAP will also provide a follow-up testing schedule to ensure continued compliance, as required by DOT regulations. Once the company enters in a negative return-to-duty drug test result, your status will become "Not Prohibited" in the Clearinghouse and you can begin driving again.
